Portal page ideas

As the "portal" page is the first page anyone sees of the site, we should make it as welcoming and informative as possilbe right? so let's brainstorm some ideas on how to do this, shall we?

What comes to mind for me at first is the red text. Sure it is noticable, but red is an agressive colour. Why don't we try green or blue? they seem much more inviting of colours. Also the one sentence: "If you are not a member...free and easy!" this comes up all smudged together(on mine at least) which people may see as a site that isnt cleaned up very often. (sorry if any of this is offensive, but we really need to make sure our appearance is its best)
